Polka Dot Starburst Quilt

Last Spring I fell in love with a fabric.  (I know, surprise, surprise.)  But the fun thing was, it had corresponding colors in polka dots!  I was in a polka dot faze.  Then only a week later one of my favorite bloggers released this design.  The freaky thing was she used the same colors that I already had picked out for this quilt.  It was like she read my mind and created a design just for me. :)

What a fun quilt to make!  I really enjoyed the process.  And loved how it turned out.

Originally I was going to quilt it similarly to how Megan quilted her's.  I even quilted 3 blocks like she did.  But I just wasn't feeling it.  It looked cool, but it wasn't giving the quilt the effect that I wanted.  I think the close together stait-line quilting I was doing at first didn't make the quilt very soft and snuggly looking. So I did what any rational quilter would do...I brought out my unpicker. :0)  Now this was no sit down and watch a movie process. It took my about 3 movies to unpick it. (No not consecutive, I have kids for heavens sake.)

I decided to quilt 1/4" away from the outside star and the inside star.  Nailed it! That was the effect I wanted.

Topsy Turvey Turtles

I have had this turtle fabric for a couple of years knowing that I would create an original design for a baby quilt.  Then this summer, my husband's friend from work announced that they were having a baby boy.  I was so excited to get to work designing this quilt.

Originally I had wanted to to a lot of the circles into turtles.  But adding the tiny turtle head, legs, and tail was not very fun nor easy... So I ended up with only two turtles on the whole quilt.  But I really like it that way.

The turtles are so cute!

I quilted 1/4" away from the circles going vertically with an indent on each horizontal row.

UFO #5: Light House Baby Quilt

Many, many years ago I found this light house fabric at Joanns.  I fell in love.  I quickly created the quilt top.  This was before I knew the correct way to paper pieces, so I was still doing it the hard way.  This was also at a time when I was learning how to do applique (the turn under kind).  (Since then I have decided the only way to applique is raw-edge.  I like the look of it better, it always turns out perfect, and it is soooo much easier.)

The reason this quilt has never been finished is because it had a large blank area.  Originally I was going to appliqué a star there.  Remember that I was doing the turn under kind of appliqué.  Have you ever tried doing a star that way? It is near impossible.  So I gave up.  Then I had the brilliant idea to applique the baby's name there.  But I had no one to give this quilt to.  So it sat for years.

Recently our renters had a baby.  A boy.  And his mom LOVES light houses.  PERFECT!

I was so excited and the best part, I love the name.  It was the name I had wanted to name my little boy only my husband claimed at the time that "It wasn't a real name."  Funny because we named our son Tayo. (Don't tell my husband, but it's not a real name. :0)  Now when I told him our renters named their baby Even, my husband said, "That's a cute name."  (Where was that comment 2 years ago?)

Anyway, I am excited to be able to cross off another UFO.

My favorite part of this quilt though is the quilted clouds.  Don't you love them.  I think it really added a great finishing touch.

Meghan's Disappearing Nine Patch Quilt

Last spring my mom fell in love with one of Moda's fabric lines called Mama Said Sew.  We decided to put together a quilt for my brother's wife since black and red is her favorite color combination.

We were on a disappearing nine patch kick (still one of our favorite blocks to do).  They are so simple and come together so quickly.  My mom did one charm pack and I did another.  Then I put them all together to make the quilt top middle.

If you have been following my blog long you know that boarders are my least favorite part so my mom did that (which she doesn't mind).  I pieced the back (something that terrifies my mom).

Then I took the quilt over to a neighbors house were we basted it together.  I taught her how to baste a quilt a while back and we did it on her ping-pong table.  Did you know that basting on a ping-pong table is great.  I want one just for basting.  I don't think her ping-pong table has been used for it's original purpose since. :0)

I then stipple quilted the whole quilt.  This was the biggest quilt I have stipple so far.  And...it really was not that bad.  I think I'm getting the hang of it.

My mom finished it by adding the binding as she is the "Binding Queen".  My mom and I really should do more quilts together as we like to do different parts of the quilt.  We may be able to finish them more often.:0)

Twins' Quilts

A lady that I visit teach recently had twin girls.  I thought this would be a fun opportunity to use the "Lucy's Crab Shack" charm pack that I have been hording saving. I wanted the quilts to be the same, but with different boarder/binding fabrics.

I found the pattern and I made one of the quilt fronts and my wonderfully talented mother made the other.  Then it was my job to put the boarders on.  I had the large floral print that I purchased when I bought the charm packs.  When I went in search of the boarder and binding material I knew it would be impossible to find the exact coordinating fabric to go with it since this line came out over a year ago. (That's what I get for hording saving fabrics too long :)  But when I went to my local quilt shop they had the pink dots in the Crab Shack line! Then I found a green dot that fit marvelously.

I put minky on the back in the opposite colors of the boarder.  Then I finished it off with an all over stippling quilting.  I love how they turned out.

Now they are off to snuggle some brand new babies.

UFO #30: Disappearing Nine Patch Baby Quilt using Reunion Fabric

Another UFO down! I am on a a roll.  Like I said, most of them were just waiting to be quilted.  And now that my quilting skill have improved, I am quilting some of my nicer quilt tops like this one.

Last year my mom and I were at our favorite quilt shop, My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe.  They taught us how to use a charm pack to make the disappearing nine patch pattern.  Oh my fun!!!  Since then we have had a lot of fun doing this pattern again and again.

The fabric is Reunion by Moda.  (My mom's favorite line.  She has lots more of it to make herself a big quilt.)

I quilted the quilt with large stipples.  I LOVE stippling and I must say I am getting pretty good at it.

This quilt is for sale at my Etsy Store.

Easter Wall Hanging

This was a mystery quilt from My Girlfriend's Quilt Shoppe that I started last spring.  I didn't get it finished in time to hand it up, so it sat will all my other UFOs until this spring.  I just had to add the embellishments and quilt it.

Now it is done and hanging on my wall.  I like it's design, but all the light pink in it makes it look a little too babyish for my taste.

UFO #37: Cherries On a Whim

I fell in love with this pattern the moment I saw it. (The pattern is from Thimble Blossoms.)  It was a very fun quilt block to make.  I had originally got the cherry print along with the orange, yellow, green, and pink dot fabric about two years ago.  I love finding a cute patterned fabric and then matching colors to go with it.  The fabrics sat on my shelf begging to be put into a quilt.  Every time I saw a new pattern that I loved, I'd thing of this fabric.  But nothing seemed right until this pattern...

The only problem with waiting years before using fabric in a quilt is that if you need more of the fabric, it is most likely going to be gone.  I really wanted to put the cherry fabric on the back, but they were all out of it.  Booo.  Fortunately, I found this pink and it matches perfectly.

This quilt will be for sale on my Etsy sight.

UFO #19: Pink and Brown Hexagon Baby Quilt

My favorite part of making a quilt is gathering the colors and designing it on paper.  My next favorite part is cutting it all out.  It is so gratifying to see neat little piles of perfectly cut fabric pieces.  Their smooth, perfect edges get me every time. :0)

I also love piecing the quilt blocks.  They are usually fairly quick to come together and don't take up too much space.

After this point, my motivation starts to fade when making a quilt.  Putting sashings on and boarders on are tedious jobs to me.  But it usually gets done.  However, basting the quilt together with the batting and back is my least favorite part.  This is why most of my UFOs are just finished quilt tops that need to be quilted.

Well, I finally put my foot down and said, "Self, get some of these quilts done and out of the way!"  So I listened.

This Hexagon quilt was started nearly 3 years ago.  I saw the pattern for it and just had to give it a try.  It was made from a jelly roll.  I sewed two strips together and then cute out triangles from the strips.  That part was fun! Then I had to fit the triangles back together to form Hexagons, not so fun. Then I had to fit the hexagons together, pain in the......(I'll say no more).  After all the hexagons where together I realized that if I chopped it down to make it a rectangular quilt it would be tiny, like doll size.  So it sat in my basket of UFOs for a year.

Finally I figured out how to add some white around the edges to make it bigger.  Satisfying.  Then it sat for another year.

Now that I know how to FMQ (free motion quilt) I thought this would be good project to practice on. So there it is.  Another UFO to check off my list. Hurray!!!!

Baby Quilt for Audrey

My sister in law commissioned me to make this quilt for a friend of hers.  I was super excited when they choose this design.

The colors they wanted were purple.  Purple was hard for me because I am not a purple person, but with the help of my little girl who loves purple, we were able to find a delicious pallet of purple fabrics.

The back is super soft and fuzzy Minkie.  I love the way the quilting textured the back.

My favorite part of this quilt is the fuzzy brown bear.  I appliquéd him on and them did a really thick zig-zag stitch around him (he is not going any where :0).

I also quilted her name at the bottom of the quilt.

UFO #36: Melissa's Baby Quilt

Back before Christmas my cousin Melissa asked me to make a quilt for her new baby.  Of course I would do it, any excuse to make a quilt is great to me! :0)  The fun part was, she already had the fabrics for it.  I love the colors she chose and I love the way they all go together.

She chose a simple pinwheel pattern contrasted with white (my new favorite contrast color).  I love how the white makes the quilt look so modern and clean.

I chose to do a scrappy binding.  And the quilting was done by Barbie Mills.  She did a wonderful job, doing the all over loop design.  I actually studied this quilt and traced it with my fingers over and over so that I could learn to quilt this pattern.

This quilt has been finished since January, but Melissa's family has been sick for the last couple months so I hadn't been able to get it to her.  Finally we arranged a play date. And now this cute little girl has her quilt.

Thanks Melissa for letting me make a quilt for your beautiful baby girl!

UFO #28: Zig Zag Red Riding Hood Quilt

I'm addicted to zig-zags right now.  Last year I found a pattern that let you make zig-zags without half square triangles.  So of course I had to try it.  This is made from a "jelly roll" which made the process so quick.

The back is not my favorite, I was being cheep and just used the extra strips to piece the back so I didn't have to buy so much fabric.  But who really looks at the back any way, right?  It's the front that I'm in love with.

 Anyone need a throw quilt?

Baby Quilt for Cesar

Here are some ideas I have bouncing around in my head:

Idea #1:

The pinwheels in the back would be all different shades of purple (or they could be a bunch of girly colors like pink, purple, yellow...).  The Teddy bear at the bottom would be a fuzzy brown material with cute buttons down his belly.

Idea #2:

Same type of design as above, only the blocks in the back ground would be just squares in different shades of purple or different girly colors.  (Go to this web sight: http://www.flickr.com/photos/patchworkpottery/5019177785/in/set-72157594146167247  It would look like that only a bear instead and different colors.)

Idea #3:
White and purple nine patch blocks that look like a chain when their all done with 3 or more teddy bears.

Idea #4:
Different blocks like pinwheels, nine patches, star blocks  with some blank spaces where I'd appliqué fuzzy teddy bears and flowers.

You can leave a comment below if you like one, or have other ideas.
