UFO #14: Coneflower Quilt

This quilt has been exactly a year in the making.  I made the top part for my step-mom Robin for her birthday last year.  But it took until now to finish the rest.

One of the things that held me up was finding the right backing.  The problem with taking so long to make a quilt is that it is nearly impossible to find the same material a year later. But I was lucky.  I found the blue star print, but only a little bit of it.  Luckily it is in style right now to add things to the backs of quilts rather than having them one solid piece of fabric.

I appliquéd the cone flowers and blanket stitched around them.

Back in January I posted about the double hourglass pattern that I found on the blog "Cluck Cluck Sew." It was such a fun and easy pattern to put together.  I had the top blocks done in a couple of days.

Originally, I was going to give this quilt away.  But I fell in love with it and knew just where it belongs, on my couch.

For the backing I used up the scrap pieces to create this fun strip of blocks.

I quilted this all by myself. (This is the biggest quilt that I've machine quilted.) I quilted in diagonal lines from left to right about 1/4 inch away from the seams.  It was really easy to quilt and I'm sure I'll be doing it again.
